Positions Summary 

  • Entry-level, part-time, remote contract position supporting a global team
  • Contract dates: July 2023 (depending on start date) to October 2023, with possibility of extension 
  • Hourly range: USD $45-60; compensation will be commensurate with experience
  • Location: anywhere
  • On average, the successful candidate will work up to 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, with flexibility to create their own schedule

Objective & Purpose

The Communications Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the global shipping campaign Say No to LNG by effectively coordinating and executing a range of communication initiatives. Working closely with the Campaign Team and Communications Specialist, the primary objective of this position is to support efforts that amplify the campaign’s messaging and highlight the detrimental impacts of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a marine shipping fuel. The Communications Assistant will gain hands-on experience supporting the campaign’s strategic communications, marketing, social media, website, and public relations.

Candidate Preferences

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a passion for communications and global environmental advocacy. Note: If you do not meet all the criteria below, we still encourage you to apply and let us know why you’re a good fit for the Communications Assistant position. 

  • Ability to deliver creative content for social media platforms, blogs, and websites
  • Ability to create simple graphics and infographics, presentations, and related visual materials
  • Experience managing social media platforms, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Reddit
  • Experience maintaining websites (e.g. WordPress) and Google Workspaces (e.g shared drives, email accounts) 
  • Experience with projects related to shipping, oil and gas, energy transition, and/or climate change 
  • Ability to conduct research, fact check, and produce engaging content efficiently for different audiences, e.g. general public, policy makers, shipping stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment that operates solely online 
  • Ability to conduct everyday organizational business in English
  • Graphic design experience (an asset)
  • Familiar with online marketing strategies, social media marketing tools and analytics (an asset)
  • Knowledgeable in media relations and public affairs (an asset)
  • Proficiency in other languages (an asset)

 

Activities & Key Responsibilities 

The Communications Assistant will be responsible for a wide range of activities and key responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Social Media Development: Develop and implement engaging social media content strategies across platforms to raise awareness and drive engagement towards the campaign’s goals. Create compelling content, schedule posts, monitor performance, and respond to comments and messages in a timely manner.
  • Website and Content Maintenance: Update and maintain the campaign’s website, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and relevance of content. Collaborate with the team to create new pages, write blog posts, and upload multimedia content.
  • Email Triage: Manage shared email inbox, including regular monitoring and triage to appropriate people and channels.
  • Asset Development: Support the creation of presentations, infographics, and other communication materials to effectively convey campaign messages.
  • Coordination and Administration: Assist with coordination tasks such as scheduling meetings, taking minutes, managing calendars, and supporting a digital filing system for the campaign’s Shared Google Drive.
  • Photo Database Management: Curate and maintain a comprehensive photo database for the campaign, ensuring a clear digital filing system and accessibility for users to access photo credits and other relevant information.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Support media monitoring, social media listening, and campaign analytics. Prepare regular reports summarizing key metrics and insights to evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts. Research and document relevant strategies, trends and polling to inform tactics and target demographics.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Campaign Team and Communications Specialist, and support efforts to improve internal communications across campaigners and partners in different regions of the world.
