Say No to LNG Campaign: A Global Solutions Framework
Recognizing there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution for shipping decarbonization, the Say No to LNG campaign adopts a solutions framework focused on a just and equitable transition.
Say No To LNG is a global shipping campaign urging policymakers, industry stakeholders, and financial institutions to rule out Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in any shipping decarbonization plan. The campaign’s goals and solutions are based on short-, mid-, and long-term pathways.
Short-Term Pathway
- Immediate implementation of operational and technical efficiency measures
- Early deployment of zero-emissions fuel and technology
- Stopping public funding of fossil fuel infrastructure
- Low-investment measures like hull/propeller cleaning and weather routing offer up to 15% fuel savings
Mid-Term Pathway
- Mass deployment of zero-emissions fuel and technology
- Continued operational efficiency improvements (even when zero-emissions fuels become available, green electricity supply may be limited)
Long-Term Pathway
- Ban greenhouse gas-emitting fuels
- Reduce vessel size and trade, where necessary
- Meet shipping decarbonization goals
- Achieve full commercial viability of the zero-emissions shipping value chain
A Global Solutions Framework
This framework delineates the four primary stakeholder groups the Say No to LNG Global Campaign is working with, its guiding principles, and the pathways forward . Urgency surrounds the imperative to reject LNG as a marine shipping fuel, especially given the increasing global prevalence of LNG vessels. Say No to LNG is advocating for four overarching considerations essential for any “solution” aimed at advancing shipping decarbonization (see circle graphic below).
