“From a well-to-wake perspective, GHG reduction benefits of natural gas remain uncertain and using LNG as a marine fuel may further dependence on fossil natural gas. Owing to these concerns the international community is starting to shift their focus towards reducing further investment in LNG-powered vessels and bunkering infrastructure.”
China is a prominent maritime nation well-positioned to support the shipping sector’s transition away from LNG and towards real zero-emissions solutions. From the cancellation of LNG-fueled vessel orders in 2021 – and the high costs of LNG-fuel system retrofits – to concerns about the long-term sustainability of natural gas, China and other country leaders are advised to move away from LNG and invest in renewable-based zero-emission marine fuels.
