April Fool’s Joke or Real Life? The LNG shipping project on the west coast of Canada has just been approved.

The Tilbury approval will have a negative impact not only on Canadians but also on people around the world. The project aims to boost the export of LNG to Asia, which could hinder the efforts of countries in that region.

Today, on April Fools Day, the Say No to LNG campaign marks our 1-year anniversary. While we’ve celebrated wins, built new partnerships, and strengthened mobilization efforts across the globe, our absurd reality continues to parody April Fools Jokes.

Exhibit A:

Just a few days ago, the British Columbia provincial government in Canada announced its approval of FortisBC’s Tilbury LNG Marine Jetty Project. This expansion will provide berthing and loading facilities for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and bunker vessels, increasing LNG production capacity at over 10,000 tonnes (equivalent to 400 Olympic swimming pools) per day for the next 30 years.

This project clearly jeopardizes the shipping sector’s ability to meet its own newly-agreed climate targets, and imperils the well-being of communities around gas fracking sites.

Say No to LNG previously submitted comments on the Environmental Assessment, identifying what the project does not account for, including:

  • The near-term climate impacts of LNG as a marine fuel;
  • The life-cycle emissions of LNG as a marine fuel (the calculations of emissions that favor LNG are not transparent);
  • The risks of LNG infrastructure becoming a stranded financial asset; and
  • The direct human health and well being impacts of the LNG infrastructure on land needed to power sea vessels.
How are all these issues connected – from land to sea?

What are people saying about this project?

The BC Wilderness Committee and Stand.earth released statements following the approval announcement: Tilbury LNG marine jetty approval shows fossil fuel industry always gets its way and Tilbury Jetty approval threatens marine pollution, climate change.

“From the climate impacts of expansion of fracked gas infrastructure to the real harms to farmers, families and Indigenous peoples living in the fracking fields of British Columbia, the approval of this project is a devastating step in the wrong direction for health.”

– Dr. Melissa Lem, Vancouver Family Physician and President, CAPE

“LNG is the latest in a string of fossil fuel lies distracting us from real climate solutions. Expanding LNG infrastructure and compounding future oversupply of LNG is a huge economic risk that could fall back on Canadians already paying too much to power their homes. The Tilbury Jetty is yet another addition to an ever-growing approval list of fossil fuel projects showing that Canada is not the international climate leader it claims to be.”

– Curtis Martin, Say No to LNG, Canada Campaigner

“Taking into consideration a comprehensive life cycle, well to wake, and 20 year global warming potential analysis of LNG used as a marine fuel for the Tilbury Jetty proposal, emissions from LNG-fueled ships could be more than twice as high as reported in the Jetty environmental assessment. Estimates show an increase in GHG emissions by up to 77% for low-methane slip engines, 116% for medium-methane slip engines, and 132% for high-methane slip engines. LNG-fueled shipping isn’t a climate solution nor in line with 1.5 degree celsius global decarbonization pathways, and it significantly hinders Canada’s ability to meet the Global Methane Pledge to cut methane emissions by 30% between 2020 and 2030.”

– Andrew Dumbrille, Say No to LNG Canada Campaigner

“The Tilbury approval will have a negative impact not only on Canadians but also on people around the world. The project aims to boost the export of LNG to Asia, which could hinder the efforts of countries in that region to meet their national climate targets. Moreover, the increased export of LNG may lead to tens of thousands of additional deaths caused by air pollution.”

– Elissama Menezes, Say No to LNG, Global Director
