Expanding LNG infrastructure and compounding future oversupply of LNG is a huge economic risk that could fall back on Canadians already paying too much to power their homes. The Tilbury Jetty is yet another addition to an ever-growing approval list of fossil fuel projects showing that Canada is not the international climate leader it claims to be.”

“Taking into consideration a comprehensive life cycle, well to wake, and 20 year global warming potential analysis of LNG used as a marine fuel for the Tilbury Jetty proposal, emissions from LNG-fueled ships could be more than twice as high as reported in the Jetty environmental assessment. Estimates show an increase in GHG emissions by up to 77% for low-methane slip engines, 116% for medium-methane slip engines, and 132% for high-methane slip engines. LNG-fueled shipping isn’t a climate solution nor in line with 1.5 degree celsius global decarbonization pathways, and it significantly hinders Canada’s ability to meet the Global Methane Pledge to cut methane emissions by 30% between 2020 and 2030.”

“The Tilbury approval will have a negative impact not only on Canadians but also on people around the world. The project aims to boost the export of LNG to Asia, which could hinder the efforts of countries in that region to meet their national climate targets. Moreover, the increased export of LNG may lead to tens of thousands of additional deaths caused by air pollution.”
